Herrngton Country Park

Close to Sunderland and accessible by bus. Good (not great) for birds and some scenery. Reasonable view of Penshaw monument 1/2 mile walk away.

Paths all around as it is a reclaimed open cast mine. Early morning is best, as it's in a depression you get some lovely light even quite late on.

I particularly like the sculpture at the top, with it's direction and distance markers
